Punch Needle Frame
Punch needle frames that hold the foundation fabric as tight as a drum make punching more enjoyable
Frames for Punching
Which type of Punch Needle Frame should I choose?
The correct frame for punch needle makes the craft so much easier and enjoyable. Whichever frame you choose, make sure it holds the fabric as tight as a drum. This makes it easier for the punch needle to glide into the fabric, making your stitches uniform in size and causes less strain on your hand as you punch. At Wild Wool Way, I offer two types of frames. Choose between the Gripper Strip Frame and Morgan No-Slip Hoops to get started.

Strip
Make your own frame. Attach a gripper strip to the frame. This gives you the option to create your own “ideal” size frame to suit your projects that you are working on.

Frame
My gripper frames are handmade locally for me in West Cork. I attached the gripper strips to the frame, sand and wax the frame to give it a lovely finish. These are a lifetime frame and can be used over and over for many projects to come.

Hoops
Morgan No-Slip Hoops can be used for any type of embroidery work. For punch needle they are more effective than a normal embroidery hoop as they have a special tongue and groove grip which keeps your foundation fabric taut.

Gripper Strips
Custom make your own gripper strip frame to suit your punch needle projects. Sometimes we need a longer frame or a bigger one than is available on the market. Make your frame and simply attach the gripper strips to the edge of the frame.
A gripper strip frame definitely gives one of the best experiences when using your punch needle. It holds your foundation cloth as tight as a drum. Your punch needle glides into the monks cloth or whatever foundation cloth you are using, this results in even loop sizes being created and makes punch needle a far more enjoyable experience.
Protective covering is required on a gripper strip frame as the gripper strips are quite sharp and can give you a nip especially on the corners.
What you will need to make your frame:

- Tin snips (or some strong cutter to cut through the metal on the strips)
- Staple gun
- Staples
- Wax (optional)
